December | Flag Flown over Gander Crash Site Recovery
Forty years ago on December 12, 1985, a charter flight en route to Fort Campbell, Kentucky from Europe crashed just after refueling at Gander, Newfoundland in Canada. Tragically, all 256 people aboard were killed, including 236 soldiers from 3rd Battalion, 502nd Infantry, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). These service members were on their way home after a six month long deployment in the Sinai Peninsula where they served as part of the Multinational Force and Observers. The crash was the worst military air disaster in American history.
The Army quickly responded to this tragedy, organizing recovery efforts which included sending twenty-eight mortuary affairs specialists from the 16th Field Service Company at Fort Lee to assist in the recovery. The Quartermasters were split into two teams, one heading to the crash site while the second team assisted with the care of remains at Dover Air Force Base. This flag flew above the team at the Gander crash site as they worked to recover and identify the dead following their creed of “Dignity, Reverence, Respect”.
